I did not mean to put TR in there twice but I am too lazy to fix it.
So...salt flats. The reason you can be so far below sea level is because of the fault movement. It's all about geology, folks. You can walk a half mile out to the salt flat (on top of salt) or you can keep going the whole five miles to the other side if you wish...
